WALL FINISHES

   

PART 1 GENERAL

 

1.1 SUMMARY

 

A. Section Includes: Acrylic base and finish coatings applied to walls [and] [ceilings] as an interior finish system.

1.2 REFERENCES

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

 

A. Design Requirements: Provide a two component acrylic wall finishing system consisting of:

   

1. Base/Top coat.

   

2. Texture coat.

   

B. Performance Requirements: Provide a wall finishing system which has been formulated and applied to meet the following criteria:

   

1. Water Vapor Permeability (ASTM D1653): 16.4 at applied specified mils.

 

2. Scrub Resistance (ASTM D2486): Exceeded 5200 cycles with no failure

 

3. Mildew Fungus Resistance (ASTM D3273): Rating of 10

 

4. Surface Burning Characteristics (ASTM E-84): Class A/Class I

 

C. Additional Testing for Stain Resistance: The following testing took place over a 3 day time period in a controlled environment. Applications of the following common substances known to stain were applied to the product: coffee, smeared blueberries, and ketchup, mustard and all-purpose grease. Product was scrubbed with a nylon bristle brush and household cleaner (Fantastic). End results: No change in product, no staining of product.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

 

A. General: Submit listed submittals in accordance with Conditions of the Contract and Division 1 Submittal Procedures Section.

 

B. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's product data and installation instructions.

 

C. Samples: Submit two selection samples, minimum size 6 inches square, representing actual color and finish of each coating type to be used [and applied to representative samples of the actual substrate materials].

 

D. Quality Assurance/Control Submittals: Submit manufacturer's certification that applicator is a trained and authorized applicator.

 

E. Closeout Submittals: Submit the following:

1. Warranty documents specified herein.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

 

A. Applicator Qualifications:

 

1. Utilize an applicator with demonstrated experience on projects of similar size and complexity.

 

B. Mock-ups: [Specify requirements for project mock-up].

 

1. Subject to acceptance by owner, mock-up may be retained and incorporated into finished work.

2. If mock-up is not incorporated into finished work, remove and properly dispose of mock-up.

 

C. Pre-Installation Meetings: Conduct a pre-installation meeting to verify project requirements, substrate conditions, and manufacturer’s warranty requirements.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

 

A. General: Comply with Division 1 Product Requirements Section.

B. Delivery: Deliver materials in manufacturer's original, unopened, undamaged containers with identification labels intact.

C. Storage and Protection: Store materials protected from exposure to harmful environmental conditions and at temperature and humidity conditions recommended by the manufacturer:

 

1. Store materials in a dry area.

2. Protect materials from direct sunlight.

3. Store materials at a temperature between 40 degrees F (4 degrees C) and 120 degrees F (49 degrees C).

 

1.7 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS

 

A. Environmental Requirements:

 

1. Do not apply product to substrates having a moisture content exceeding 18%.

2. Do not apply product to a non-porous substrate.

3. Apply product when ambient temperature is between 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) and 90 degrees F (32 degrees C), in a relative humidity range of 20% to 80%.

4. Utilize forced air heating units installed in the structure.

   

a. Maintain structure at a minimum temperature of 50 degrees F for a period of 48 hours prior to application. Continue to maintain structure at that temperature through completion.

b. Maintain new unoccupied structures at a minimum temperature of 50 degrees F until structure is occupied.

1.8 WARRANTY

 

A. Project Warranty: Refer to Conditions of the Contract for project warranty provisions.

 

B. Manufacturer's Warranty: Submit, for Owner's acceptance, manufacturer's standard warranty document executed by authorized company official. Manufacturer's warranty is in addition to, and not a limitation of, other rights Owner may have under contract documents.

 

1. Provide warranty by wall finishes manufacturer warrants the finished surfaces under normal conditions of exposure and wear when the materials are applied according to manufacturer’s instructions.

 

2. Warranty Period: Five years commencing with date of substantial completion.

 

1.9 MAINTENANCE

 

A. Extra Materials: Provide additional material for use by owner in building maintenance and repair.

 

B. Deliver extra touch-up materials to owner in original packaging with appropriate labeling. Provide 1/2 gallon from the same batch number, for every 5,000 square feet applied on the project.

 

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.2 PRODUCT SUBSTITUTIONS

 

A. Substitutions: No substitutions permitted.

 

2.3 EQUIPMENT

 

A. Application Equipment: Utilize manufacturer-recommended application equipment as follows:

 

1. For Base/Top Coat: Commercial grade sprayer equivalent to output of at least 1/2 gallon per minute or higher, 3300 psig.

2. For Texture Coat: Texture Sprayer. Kodiak New Generation M2 setup for Acrylitex is recommended. It is a specially designed texture sprayer that combines variable speed control and high pressure, large spray rig or hand-held hopper.

3. For Hand Texture: Hawk and trowel or pan and knife for hand textures.

4. Accessories: Pole guns and sprayer tips, the size of which will vary with desired texture.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS

 

A. Comply with the instructions and recommendations of the wall finish system manufacturer.

 
 

3.2 EXAMINATION

 

A. Site Verification of Conditions:.

 
  • 1. Verify that conditions are satisfactory for application of wall finish.

  • 2. Conduct moisture test on substrate using a handheld calibrated moisture meter to determine surface moisture percentage.

  • 3. Do not apply product until moisture levels comply with manufacturer's requirements, and until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

 
 

3.3 PREPARATION

 

A. Protection: Mask all adjacent areas not specifically intended to receive coating system application.

 

B. Product Temperature: Maintain product at minimum temperature of 50 degrees F or ambient temperature of structure prior to application.

C. Preparation for All Surfaces:

 

1. Surfaces must be clean, dry, sound and properly cured.

2. Surfaces must be free of dust, dirt, oil, grease, mildew, fungus, efflorescence, loose paint or other contaminants.

3. Surfaces must be free of chalking, blistering, peeling, cracking and delamination.

 

D. Additional Preparation for Gypsum Wallboard Surfaces:

 

1. Finish gypsum wallboard in compliance with Gypsum Association Finish Level 3 or higher.

2. Product is recommended for new gypsum substrate. Where the drywall is not new, apply drywall primer. Allow primer to completely dry before wall finish application.

3. Do not apply hot mud unless cured for 7 days and coated with a vinyl joint compound, then primed with Kilz.

 

E. Additional Preparation for New Concrete and Masonry Surfaces:

 

1. Finish or grind concrete joints flat and level with adjacent surfaces.

2. Fill concrete and masonry surface imperfections such as cracks and honeycomb with a non-shrinking cementitious patching compound such as Sonoborn GelPatch or a comparable product.

3. Prepare new concrete and masonry surfaces by washing with a cleaning solution of two pounds of trisodium phosphate (TSP) mixed with one gallon of hot water. Allow 72 hours drying time before wall finish application.

4. Prime rust-stained areas with a sealing primer such as Kilz or a comparable product.

3.4 APPLICATION

 

A. General:Required coverage rates and mil thickness on interior substrates will vary depending on type of texture specified and applicator technique.

 

B. Apply wall finish material at the following nominal coverage rates and wet mil thickness:

 

1. [Base/Top Coat: 200 – 225 sq. ft per gallon applied at 7-8 wet mils (0.007 to 0.008 inch).]

 

2. [Finish Coat - Light Orange Peel Texture: 160 sq. ft. per gallon applied at 10 wet mils (0.0010 inch).]

 

3. [Finish Coat - Medium Orange Peel Texture: 150-160 sq. ft. per gallon applied at 10-12 wet mils (0.0010 to 0.012 inch).]

 

4. [Finish Coat - Medium Knockdown Texture: 150-160 sq. ft. per gallon applied at 10-12 wet mils (0.010 to 0.012 inch).]

 

5. [Finish Coat - Heavy Knockdown Texture: 100-120 sq. ft. per gallon applied at 14-16 wet mils (0.014 to 0.016 inch).]

 

6. [Finish Coat – Hand Texture: 140-200 sq. ft. per gallon. Mil rate depends on thickness of texture.]

 

C. Allow Base/Topcoat to completely dry before application of texture coat. For lighter colors, you may need to use additional Base/Topcoat to cover. Drying time will vary dependent on air temperature, ventilation and relative humidity.

3.5 CLEANING

 

A. Using methods recommended by manufacturer; clean all areas of wall finish soiled after application and prior to project completion.

 

1. Allow at least 7 days curing after application of wall and ceiling finish before scrubbing surfaces to which it was applied.

 

3.6  PROTECTION

 

A. Protect applied finish material from damage due to subsequent construction activity.
